In 40 ABY, Darth Varan, Darth Spike, and their fleets had retreated to Coruscant, where several Imperial Soldiers and Sith were already at, as the planet had been conquered by the Empire earlier in the year. The Republic arrived, and managed to drive the Empire out and retake Coruscant. During the battle, Spike was killed by Kahar Zamet, so his fleet merged with Varan's fleet.
